Pay Campaign Update
Following the very successful strike on April 24th, the campaign has continued via a national petition, a national lobby of Parliament, street stalls, joint working with the NUS on student loans and with other Public Sector unions doing detailed work with back bench MPs.
The UNISON action shows that more trade unions are coming to realise the importance of taking action to stop the decline in Public Sector pay. The Daily Telegraph last week estimated the real rate of inflation as 9.5%. Senior economists continue to say that Public Sector pay does not cause inflation.
The National Executive has unanimously decided on a ballot timetable for further action in the Autumn term to be conducted if the Government doesn't respond seriously to the STRB, allowing it a new remit to give an additional pay rise to match inflation. The expected date for the ballot to commence is on Monday October 6th This strategy will be confirmed at a special executive on September 5th and discussed at a National Secretaries meeting on September 16th. Campaigning materials are being produced over the holiday and should be ready for us in schools at the beginning of September.

For Part-Time Teachers
The government has recently decided to implement changes, recommended by The School Teachers’ Review Body, to the way that pro-rata salaries for part time teachers are calculated. These changes will come into effect from 1st September 2008. The government’s stated aim for the changes is to ensure consistency and fairness in the calculation of part-time teacher pay across all employers subject to the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.
