The Union Learning Representative
The Union Learning Representative (ULR) is a union representative who promotes lifelong learning. A ULR helps and supports colleagues in identifying and embracing learning opportunities.
Particular groups of employees are often disadvantaged throughout their careers and especially when it comes to assessing continuing professional development. Consequently, ULRs look to ensure that access to learning addresses these issues and everybody is encouraged to develop themselves.
ULRs form active partnerships with employers to help develop a ‘learning culture’ in the workplace where training and education are valued by all. This includes working with managers to plan learning opportunities and encourage employees to embrace lifelong learning.
The ULR does not look to support just workplace-based continuing professional development but also learning which is related to individuals’ personal and professional needs. We view this as lifelong learning.
ULRs empower colleagues to consider and access learning opportunities to meet their needs. Indeed we recognise that personal learning can contribute to relieving employees’ stress and aid the employee’s work/life balance.
ULRs are at the heart of instilling a learning culture in the workplace and the great thing about us is that we are here to help our colleagues in all aspects of learning, whether its developing new skills or updating existing ones, for personal fulfilment or professional development.
